PALESTINE Palestine: Palestine colored copperplate authors are Alexis Hubert Jaillot (1632 - 1712) - French engraver, cartographer and publisher of successful large-scale map by the "Aux deux Globes" and his equally successful colleague Nicolas Sanson (1600 - 1667) - the most prolific French cartographer XVII. cent., noble in Abbeville in Picardy. Map sheet comes from the Atlas Francais, issued in 1696 in Paris. Osu maps form the Jordan River (Iordanis fluvius), resulting in the Lebanese mountains (Libanus Mons) and running through Galilee (Mare Galileae) and the Dead Sea (Mare Mortum). The map localize places mentioned in the Bible - Sodom and Gomorrah in the Dead Sea destroyed by an angry God "brimstone and fire", Bethlehem (Bethlehem) south of Jerusalem - the birthplace of Jesus, Capernaum (Kapharnaum) on the north bank of the Sea of Galilee - the birthplace of the Apostle Peter or volcanic mountain Tabor (Mons Thabor) west of Nazareth (Genesareth) and the Mount of Olives (olives M.) on the eastern outskirts of Jerusalem associated with Christ's ascension. Biblical motifs bears also map cartouche decoration.
