BRATISLAVA The view of Bratislava/Hungarian Posonium,German Pressburg/.This name had the Slovakian capital till 1918.The first picture of Bratislava was published in Cologne in 1618.It's a part of the book "Urbium praecipituarum mundi theatrum quintum"/ World cities Atlas/,published by editors Georg Braun /1541 - 1622/ and Abraham Hogenberg /1608 - 1653/.The author of the model was the German master Joris Hofnagel /1540 - 1600/. This picture is the coloured copperengraving,published by his son Jacob Hoefnagel /German engraver 1575-1630/.The city, at that time Hungarian , is shown here from the right bank of the Danube,in the left part of the picture rises on the rock of southern part of the Little Carpatians Bratislava Castle,the residence of the Hungarian branch of the Habsburg monarchy till 1780.In the upper right corner under the title is a very interesting note.The engraver remembers here Wolfgang Lazius/the famous Hungarian humanist and historygrapher of the emperor Ferdinand I./ who was the author of the second oldest map of Hungary 1556. This is the most favoured map of Bratislava.
